Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then located many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident made him without words and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
