A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
