EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
